Exciting Moiré Materials for Quantum Light and Matter

Date/Time: 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM | Wednesday, 08th January 2025

In this talk, Prof. Ajit Srivastava will be talking about Atomically thin semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (sTMDs) like WSe₂ and WS₂ are revolutionizing materials physics, enabling the study of emergent quantum phases through engineered heterostructures. Moiré heterostructures enhance Coulomb interactions and reduce kinetic energy, creating a platform for strongly correlated electronic and optical phenomena. In this talk, he will present his recent discovery of many-body interaction-induced ferroelectric ordering of moiré excitons in H-stacked WSe₂/WS₂ heterobilayers. Strong exciton-exciton repulsion leads to an excitonic Mott state, with time-resolved photoluminescence revealing signatures of ferroelectric ordering. This novel cooperative phenomenon opens pathways to exploring correlated quantum phases and uncovering exotic light-matter interactions in driven-dissipative systems.
